Who am I and how did I get here?
Hi, I’m Matt Young, a digital marketer who specialises in Social Media. I’ve been working in the industry since 2010 after spotting social media’s potential as a marketing tool as far back as 2008. Before that, I was a full-time radio presenter working in the Southwest of England for Heart and Gemini FM.
It was back in 2010 that I was made redundant, as the company had a major shake-up and consolidated several radio stations in to one. I was aware that changes were coming so had already started to look outside of the industry to see what else I might be able to do.
On the radio, I hosted the breakfast show and was reasonably well known in the city (not a very humble boast), but when I started using Twitter to network locally, I met many, many more people than I ever did being ‘that bloke off the radio’. It was an incredibly powerful tool and I have been showing people how to use it and other social media sites to promote their business ever since.
I still occasionally fill in on the radio when someone goes on holiday… it’s in my DNA and the communication skills I have learned from being on the radio, have been invaluable.
Claim to fame: Calling a TV show about football aged 9 and asking a question live on air. I was so excited about getting on the TV that I didn’t even listen to the answer.
Social Media Claim to Fame: One of my first jobs in social media was writing the social media strategy for an organisation with a turnover of £500 million! (They still refer to it today)
Favourite social media platform: This changes on a fairly regular basis but right now, it would probably be YouTube.
Likes: Dogs (especially my two cocker spaniels, Dave & Doris), Exeter City FC, Cheesecake, Guinness (in moderation) and talking!
Dislikes: Arrogance, Bad Hygiene, Crocs (the shoes), Snobs & Tyrants.
Ambition: To be deliriously happy…
