Matt the Radio Presenter
I love being on the radio and broadcasting in general. I got in to it later than most, at the tender age of 27. I started out at BBC Radio Kent, where’d I’d been trained for 6 months, covering the early broadcast assistant shift on Monday morning’s for four hours (it hardly covered my petrol costs for getting there but I didn’t care).
I got my first proper paid radio job in 1999 at KFM in Tonbridge, Kent. It was soon rebranded to Mercury FM and eventually became KMFM. I was eventually offered the evening slot (7-11pm) after having hosted the weekend breakfast show for 2 years, driven around in Black Thunder and also been the website’s content manager (koko.com).
Devon came calling…
In 2002, I got a call from a former hospital radio friend of mine (Paul Hopper) who offered me a job presenting on Lantern FM in North Devon. I worked on the breakfast show alongside Emma and we were better known at PJ & Spanky; and yes, I was the Spanky half. I also presented Drivetime for 18 months after PJ went on maternity leave until Gemini breakfast became available and I went for it.
Broadcasting to Exeter
In June 2006, I started broadcasting on the Breakfast show at Gemini FM in Exeter with the hugely talented Ben Moseby, a thoroughly decent human-being. Our show was known as “Matt & Charlie in the Morning” mainly because Gemini already had a Ben so Charlie used his other name when he first joined the station (very confusing… I still don’t know what to call him!?!?). We worked together for 2 years when Charlie then decided he wanted to work closer to home (Torquay) and got a job at Palm in Torbay. At this time I also started work on a football radio show called Kellow’s Bootlaces, which was a show all about Exeter City FC. We broadcast this show on Monday evening’s (7-8pm) online and on the digital output of the station.
I then worked with the very lovely Dani Finch for another 2 years (called Matt & Dani funnily enough!). During this time the station was purchased by Global Radio and it was rebranded to Heart FM. Dani & I worked together until Global Radio merged 5 Devon radio stations and created Heart Devon in August 2010. At this point, the entire on-air staff were all made redundant and a new team was brought in to launch the newly rebranded station.
After leaving radio alone for a year, the itch to be broadcasting again was back and I scratched it by taking the opportunity to work at Radio Exe on the Drivetime show from August 2011. I worked here in full and part-time positions until the end of 2014. I also had a very brief (couple of months) period working on Palm in Torbay where I presented the Sunday lunchtime show, but Charlie was long gone by this time. I was looking forward to working weekends on the radio and doing my social media bits and bobs during the week but then I put in a call to Heart and the rest is history….
Back on Heart!
This brings me bang up to date… you can now find me on Heart Southwest, presenting the Saturday afternoon show (1-5pm) from the exact same studio I left way back in August 2010! You might catch me covering the odd mid-week show too… I love it! Heart really is a great place to work but it is just great working on the radio. It is a privilege to talk to people when they call in and help guide you home and possibly avoid the traffic too. You can drop me a line when I’m in the studio by texting the word ‘WEEKEND’ and your message and sending it to 82122.
